The chunky yarn in the Heights Cowl makes it super warm and the woven style stitch of the leaping blocks and stripes stitch is very effective at fighting off those chilly temperatures!

This pattern requires five buttons, four that are visible and one that is hidden. You can always use only three visible buttons if you prefer and the beauty of this pattern is that you don’t have to create button holes. The buttons slip between any two stitches.
The Heights Cowl is crocheted using a size 5 bulky weight yarn and a N or P (10.00 mm) crochet hook, which makes this project work up quickly. The only stitches you need to know are the single crochet and double crochet.
So the thing about the leaping blocks and stripes stitch is that you will be working your double crochets over top of chains from the previous row and then working into the stitches two rows below. That is what gives the stitch the staggered or woven look.
It can feel awkward at first, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes super easy. I would say that this pattern is probably an Easy/Intermediate level crochet pattern because of my previous statement.
There is a matching beanie pattern available for you as well if you’d prefer a set. You can find that pattern for the Heights Beanie here.

Notes:
- If
you’d like to use the stitch pattern for any other project or to
adjust the size of this project, use a foundation chain (starting
chain) with a multiple of 4 chains plus 2.
- The
photos after each row were taken from the hat pattern so the number
of double crochets for the cowl will not be the same as the photo.
The photos are for instructional purposes only.
- The
Final Row has two options based on what row repeat you finish on.
Count your rows before you work your Final Row so you know which one
to use.
- When
placing your buttons, it doesn’t matter which side of the rectangle
that you choose to attach them. There is no right side or wrong
side; they are the same. Choose a side and place all of your buttons
along the same edge, although on opposite sides of the rectangle.
See the “Finishing” section for more info.

Finishing – Adding buttons
Your buttons will be stitched along the same edge of your rectangle, but will be on opposite sides.
Measuring 11” from one end, stitch your single button (the black one as shown in the photo below).
Along the same edge, but on the opposite side of the scarf, beginning 1” from the end, attach your first button. Attach each additional button approximately 3 ¼” – 3 ½” apart.
There are no button holes. You can fit your buttons between any of the stitches. Simply line up your edges before threading your buttons between the stitches.
How to button your Heights Cowl
Step 1 – Lay your cowl out with the four larger buttons facing the table. Fold over the button end and button your single button through the corner opposite the four buttons.
Step 2 – Fold the opposite end over, lining up the bottom corner to the button closest to the end of the cowl.
Step 3 – Begin buttoning the four buttons along the edge of the cowl. There are no button holes, so you will just fit the button between your stitches.
Step 4 – Make sure your buttons are spaced evenly.
Step 5 – Fold over the top “collar” of the cowl.

Hello! I”m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the stitch pattern. I’d like to recommend a video done by Tamara Kelly of Moogly blog. You can see that video stitch tutorial at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3m5buKF13Y&t=247s
If you still find that the video isn’t helpful, please email me at highlandhickorydesigns@gmail.com for one on one help. Thank you!
I need a little help with your instructions. Something just isn’t working right for me. As I crochet each row, it’s creating a huge pocket in the middle, almost like I am creating a front and a back. Can you help?
